Over 600 ballots were received from both St. Bernard and St. Mary Parishes. By a very large margin the top choice was “St. Bernard-St. Mary”, second by a significant margin was “St. Mary Bernard”. The next three were “Divine Mercy, “All Saints”, and “Our Lady of the Americas”.
It is interesting to note that the top three choices were the same for both parishes. These results will be submitted to the bishop for his decision. St. Mary Bernard is a real person, baptized Verena Bulter in Switzerland in 1848. She entered a Franciscan religious community and with six companions formed a new community to minister to the poor in Ecuador. She was forced to flee to Cartagena, Colombia and ministered to the poor in that city. She died in 1924 and was canonized in 2008. It would seem that we have much in common with her, should the bishop choose her as our patroness.
