Please take note of the Holy Week Schedule in today’s bulletin. According to the Roman Missal, 3rd Edition, the Palm Sunday Mass with Procession occurs at one principal Mass. If I understand it correctly, the idea is to have one central Mass in which the majority of people participate in the re-enactment of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem. If you want to attend a mass with a procession then 9:30 is it this year.
The Altar Servers and Readers have been scheduled for Holy Week.
Ushers and Greeters are desperately needed, especially on Easter Sunday. Please Sign Up in the Usher/Greeter Room beginning today to be sure the Masses and Services are covered. Name Tags will be provided. Parishioners and visitors need to know who you are when they need something, or when asked to make room in the pew, or directed to the cry room.
Eucharistic Ministers are to Sign Up in the Sacristy to assist at Holy Week Events beginning today. This way we know there will be enough ministers at all the Masses and Services next week. As Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, you are encouraged to attend the Holy Thursday Mass at 7:30pm.
This year the Passion, Veneration of the Cross, and Communion Service for Good Friday will be at 12:10 PM to accommodate the noon crowd. Stations of the Cross will be later that afternoon.
The Easter Vigil cannot begin before nightfall on April 7th. Weather permitting we will gather outside for the lighting of the Easter Fire and Candle at 9:30 PM.
Remember PARKING IS FREE and available in the West Campus (Polsky) Parking Deck. Please tell a friend or invite a family member to worship with us as we celebrate the Lord’s Death and Resurrection to Life.
My thanks to the many who responded to Fr. Norm’s need for a cook – well, mine too – but he got the most sympathy! Your assistance will be less work on those faithful few who have been helping us the past year and a half. God bless you for stepping up to the stove!
We’re coming into the home stretch for the Night at the Races. I hope you plan to join us on May 4th. We need the horsepower.
Bit by bit – no reference to horses – the old school building is being dismantled. You may have noticed one of the fire escapes has been taken to the scrap yard. Some materials inside have been scrapped as well. This will save us when it comes to demolishing the building and beautifying the corner. But not any time soon. Much asbestos has to be professionally removed.
An annual fund-raiser for the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank will be held Sunday, May 6. This is one of our major sources of food for our 3 hunger programs. More information will be forthcoming.
For nearly 13 years Mrs. Ada Gelpi has served the Spanish-speaking community in the Akron and outlying areas of Summit County. For the past eight years she has been a significant member of the St. Bernard, and now SB-SM, Parish Staff.
Her dedication to the social and spiritual needs of this community has been admirable. For personal reasons she now finds it necessary to step down from her role as Director of Hispanic Ministry.
After the departure of Fr. Paul Schindler, and then Fr. Clyde Foster, Ada was an anchor for people who were not certain what would happen as the parishes merged. After the merger, Ada stepped right up to assist the staff at the school where nearly 12-15% of the students are from Spanish-speaking households.
Although understanding her need to step down, it is with great sadness that we watch an era – not only in a Catholic parish but in Summit County – enter a period of crucial transition.
As we bid farewell, it is with sincere gratitude and heartfelt concern that we assure her and her family of our prayers. Muchisimas Gracias! Dios te bendiga siempre, Ada!
Let us pray for one another. Peace, Fr. Dan
