From the Pastor

Dear Community of St. Bernard,

In recent weeks many people in other states and countries have been devastated and uprooted by natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and Maria.  We see in the news of the hundreds of lives lost by an earthquake in Mexico.

I thank you for your generous responses to our Bishop’s requests for financial assistance to these disaster areas to help Catholic Charities Relief Services respond to the extraordinary number of people in distress this year.

Some of my own friends have been devastated by the destruction of their home by fire recently (see on our website: The Teague Family).  How important is our faith at times like these.  You appreciate all the more the people and blessings in your life.  And you can be amazed at the charitable response of fellow Christians.  God is so good.

Peace and Good,
Fr. Dan

The Teague Family

In recent weeks many people in other states and countries have been devastated and uprooted by natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and Maria.  We see in the news of the hundreds of lives lost by an earthquake in Mexico.

A week or so ago I baptized the eighth child of young couple I’ve known for years from Wooster, Ohio.  A few days later they called to tell me their house was on fire.  (I had only left it a few hours earlier.)  By the grace of God the mom, who you can imagine does not get much sleep with a one month old baby, heard the smoke detector alarm.  She woke everyone, and both parents were able to get everyone out of the house, including the dog, before it was destroyed by the fire.  Although grateful to God no one was hurt, they lost everything but the clothes on their backs!

Some at St. Bernard have asked how they could help.  THANK YOU!

Their friends have created a website listing ages and sizes of clothes. You can find it at:       And, if you would care to help with financial assistance, make your check or money order out to: Phillip/Mindy Teague (NO Cash, please).  Get it to me here at the parish and I’ll see that they receive it:

I know they will want to thank you, so please add your name and address. I thank you too.       Fr. Dan

Have you ever considered being part of a Catholic Men’s organization?  Men who are followers of Jesus Christ through prayer and charitable works.  Then consider this world wide organization known as the K of C.  They meet here at St. Bernard monthly and can be reach via the parish office for more information.  Also, you will find pamphlets on the Kiosk at the church front entrance.

Once again will gather on Wednesdays at 6:30pm for a free dinner and social hour.  Let’s support one another as RooCatholics: learn about events at the University, grow in faith with input from guest speakers, celebrate the Sacraments of Christ’s grace, and much more.

With the latest papal instruction regarding the care of a deceased loved one’s ashes, we ask families to have their funeral director contact the church when burial arrangements have been made.  If you are not working with a funeral home, please contact a cemetery directly to make arrangements.  Questions may be directed a specific cemetery or to:

Blessed Sacrament Chapel

We now provide a quiet, reverent and secure place for private prayer before Our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.  You are welcome to stop for prayer, adoration, and reflection.

We strongly encourage making time this week as students are returning to classrooms. They certainly could benefit from our prayers and example.  Always remember to give thanks that the Lord “has made you worthy to be in his presence and to minister to him” (Eucharistic Prayer II).

Perpetual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held each day in the former convent chapel and entry is off the lower parking lot or through the parish offices.  Look for the door marked “Blessed Sacrament Chapel”.  Please respect this sacred space by not carrying on conversations or reading non-religious materials in the chapel.

The Heart of Christ in the Heart of Akron.  He waits for you.

Church Organ Fund

Dear Friends of St. Bernard,

In fall 2012, we began an all-out-effort to restore and expand our 111-year-old church organ. The last major restoration had been 60 years ago.

Having reached the estimated goal to begin the restoration, we are in the contract phase with Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.  The restoration has begun and will be completed by the end of 2017.  In this time we plan to raise the difference between the estimated funds and actual funds: $40,000.

You can see the progress they are making on the restoration at the following website:

The Schantz Organ Company installed our church organ in 1905.  We are fortunate to have a committed team who care not only for our pipe organ, but for one of their own. The restoration by Schantz will provide us with another 70-80 years of liturgical music. Their proposal, and so the difference in price, includes a new 2017 organ console, not a rebuilt one, as originally proposed.  The construction of wind chests will be done by them.  The refinishing and replacing of missing pipes is included.  All in all, it will be complete restoration of the organ they installed a century ago, yet with room for expansion if desired in the future.

We are still accepting any size donation to meet our over all goal of restoring this first-class instrument to its beauty when Fr. Broun had it installed in 1905.  Please make checks payable to the St. Bernard Organ Fund.

In memory of a loved one(s):
$100.00 per pipe or
$6,000 for a rank of 61 pipes (over 24 months)

For the Glory of God, Fr. Dan
