Family Perspectives

Posted on Aug 19 , 2011 in Announcements

When Jesus asked, “Who do people say I am?” He heard a variety of answers. If that question was asked about us, how would people answer? We juggle many roles to meet the many demands on our time. It takes special effort not to neglect our family responsibilities as spouse, parent, son, or daughter. Who do people say you are? Would you get the answer you want to hear?

Panhandling

Posted on Aug 12 , 2011 in Announcements

(Recently a parishioner informed me she was approached inside the church for a handout. She wasn’t the only one. It can be intimidating and frightening for some. We are aware of the growing number of people in need these days, and we are trying to respond. But, panhandling on church property is not permitted. If you do not know what to say, please direct the person to come see me at the office. I share the following article taken from a bulletin a parishioner read while attending another church. The italics are my adaptation. Thank you. Fr. Dan)

“In the rare instance that you are panhandled anywhere on the property, please do not, for any reason, give money. For nearly 30 years our 3 Hunger Programs have been able to take care of anyone in need of emergency food. The dangers of giving out money are these: 1) it creates an ever-increasing number of panhandlers, making it hard to get into church; 2) the most easily intimidated and vulnerable are often the targets; and 3) the money will not be used for the purposes for which it is asked. Please trust the parish on this point, that giving money undermines our sincere help for those who are on the street struggling with addictions. If you feel the need to give because you want to help the poor, come help us distribute food, or contribute to our Hunger Program Fund or agencies (all underfunded) that help people who are struggling.”

Faith and Values Appeal

Posted on Aug 12 , 2011 in Announcements

Faith and Values Appeal – Next Sunday, August 21st will be a second collection for our school children. Faith and Values provides funds for Diocesan Tuition Assistance, distributed to eligible children in Diocesan Catholic Schools [including our SB-SM Grade School]. Scholarship grants range from $200-$1000, depending on financial need. One student wrote to thank a donor:

The miracle you provided us will ensure great things to come and will help relieve my mother of hardship. Because of this great gift you bestowed, she has one less thing to worry about, and I have one less thing to worry about.

Gifts to this second collection provide a quality Catholic education to a number of our own parishioner families whose children attend SB-SM School. This 2011-2012 School Year, 53 of our students will benefit from this Collection. The majority of them have received the maximum grant allowable. Thank you for generous support to children in our Catholic Schools throughout these eight counties of the Cleveland Diocese.

Family Perspectives

Posted on Aug 12 , 2011 in Announcements

Family Perspectives – Sometimes it isn’t the troubles we face that make life hard; it’s our fear and doubt that weakens our resolve. The gospel today recounts how Jesus calmed fears and encouraged His followers. We can trust the calming presence of Christ in our family life. Our families can be like Christ when we encourage those facing trouble.
