Grounds for Faith is a CYO-sponsored coffee house for young adults and takes place the second Friday of each month at Guardian Angels. Young people come together to listen to a speaker, enjoy coffee and refreshments, discuss topics and socialize. All single and married young adults are invited to attend. Family Perspectives – Sometimes it isn’t the troubles we face that make life hard; it’s our fear and doubt that weakens our resolve. The gospel today recounts how Jesus calmed fears and encouraged His followers. We can trust the calming presence of Christ in our family life. Our families can be like Christ when we encourage those facing trouble.

Please join us at a Women’s Breakfast Saturday, August 27th at 9:30 A.M. Topics: “Women’s Health: Taking Care of Yourself” (speaker Dr. Cheryl Johnson), and “Adding Creativity to Your Life” (Brenda Mitchell). It will be held in the social hall at St. Bernard- St. Mary Parish (44 University Ave.). No charge for the event. There will be door prizes, and health information handouts! Bring a friend and enjoy an informative breakfast together with the women of Akron. The breakfast is sponsored by St. Bernard-St. Mary Parish and Neighbor to Neighbor Woman. PARISH PICNIC at Loyal Oak Lake Park (Hametown Rd., Norton) on Sunday, August 21st after the 11:30 Mass. Bring your family and a picnic lunch. The Knights of Columbus have paid your admission, reserved a Pavilion, and will set up charcoal grills for those who need to cook. There is swimming, Putt-Putt golf, and Volleyball. This year No food or beverages will be served and there will be No Mass at the park. Please bring along enough food for your family and guests, and any games or activities to enjoy. Let’s have some FUN together!

If you are not Catholic and might be interested in becoming Catholic or you are Catholic and need to complete your Catholic initiation (baptized but never confirmed) please contact Deacon Ray on the Parish Web Site by email, or call and leave a message (330-253-5161 ext 15). We will begin meeting to talk about the journey to become Catholic and what that entails in early September. We will also help if you need only to be confirmed. Bus Trip to Birmingham – There are a few openings for the upcoming bus trip to Birmingham, Alabama leaving on Monday, September 19 and returning late Friday, September 23. The trip includes a 7:00 a.m. televised Mass on EWTN, a live show with Fr. Mitch, Mass with the Religious Sisters of Mother Angelica at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery. Fr. Retrouvaille – is a weekend and six follow-up sessions for couples who are struggling in their marriage. The next Retrouvaille (“Hope for troubled marriages”) weekend will be held at the Hilton Hotel – Cleveland East in Beachwood on September 16-18. Outdoor Music Festival! Light of the World Prayer Group Morning Son Music Ministry presents their Seventh Annual Outdoor PRAISE IN THE VALLEY Music Festival at St. Martin of Tours, 1800 Station Road, Valley City, OH 44280 on Saturday, September 3rd. 2ND Annual Ohio Race for Maggie’s Place will kick off at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Saturday, August 27 at 8 am, with proceeds benefiting Maggie’s Place — a nonprofit offering homes of hospitality to pregnant women who are homeless or otherwise alone. The Servants of Mary is welcoming Fr. Larry Richards on August 21. He will be speaking on his new book: “Surrender!” The Secret to a Peaceful Life.
