St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born in 1090 and died in 1153. He was a great reformer of religious life and founded hundreds of monasteries throughout Europe. A prolific writer and mystic to whom the prayer, The Memorare, is attributed due to his devotion to the Blessed Mother. Consultor to popes and preacher of the Gospel, this humble monk was the inspiration to men and women for centuries, including some who today are recognized as saints.
Make no mistake, this St. Bernard is not the one associated with a breed of dogs. That would be St. Bernard of Aosta; an Italian who provided hospitality and emergency service (via his dogs) to travelers through the Alps.
