Holy Family

What is it that makes a family “holy”? We have expectations of peacefulness, a lack of turmoil or discord, or an ability to deal with the ups and downs of life with equanimity. These expectations can lead us to judge our own families as not “holy”. A microcosm of this can be seen in parents of young children as they come to Mass. (more…)

Mary’s Example of Joy

We hear the call to rejoice, but it does not seem possible to do so. If we expect only the joy of the moment, the joy rooted in our own success and happiness, or the joy of no difficulties, then it is indeed impossible to rejoice always. Christ the King

As we celebrate Christ the King our Gospel contrasts the kingship of Jesus in His dominion with the kingship of domination exemplified by Pilate. The illusion of self sufficiency

Our society places great emphasis upon financial responsibility and providing for oneself. We spend great deal of energy, time and money planning and projecting for our financial needs. The Scriptures today confront us with images and examples that are incomprehensible from this perspective.
