On the Feast of the Epiphany or “El Dia de los Reyes” among Hispanic communities and in Latin America there is a custom of hiding a small plastic baby Jesus in a cake baked especially for the feast. (more…)

What is it that makes a family “holy”? We have expectations of peacefulness, a lack of turmoil or discord, or an ability to deal with the ups and downs of life with equanimity. These expectations can lead us to judge our own families as not “holy”. A microcosm of this can be seen in parents of young children as they come to Mass. (more…)

As the celebration of Christmas approaches, Mary becomes the very embodiment of how a faithful disciple becomes open to the presence of God and bears that presence to others.  Her first response is trust and commitment. (more…)

We hear the call to rejoice, but it does not seem possible to do so. If we expect only the joy of the moment, the joy rooted in our own success and happiness, or the joy of no difficulties, then it is indeed impossible to rejoice always. If we look for the joy that is the fruit of the Holy Spirit, then it is a gift that is with us always. (more…)

As we celebrate Christ the King our Gospel contrasts the kingship of Jesus in His dominion with the kingship of domination exemplified by Pilate. In history we have tended to shape Christ into the image of our human kings and rulers, instead of human kings and rulers being shaped into the image of Jesus. (more…)

Along with the other anxieties of our society some have added an anxiety about the violent end of our world. We have shifted our focus from man-made disasters to natural and cosmic ones. (more…)

Our society places great emphasis upon financial responsibility and providing for oneself. We spend great deal of energy, time and money planning and projecting for our financial needs. The Scriptures today confront us with images and examples that are incomprehensible from this perspective. These widows giving up all that they had to live on challenge us in our own outlook and decisions. (more…)
