Blessed Sacrament Chapel

Featured

THE BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL –  Is available Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm for anyone to make a visit before the Lord in the Eucharist.  This time of quiet prayer in the heart of downtown Akron is a blessing to many.

At any time of the year, but especially this week when we celebrate the Feast of His Body and Blood, you are invited to spend a few minutes or an hour with Him.

For your comfort a washroom is available and security cameras are in the chapel.  If for some reason the lower entry door is locked please come to the parish office for access.

From the Pastor

Dear Community of St. Bernard,

Our congratulations and good wishes to Fr. Paul E. Schindler who celebrated with us this weekend his 50th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood.  Fr. Schindler served in our Diocesan Mission in El Salvador for ten years before being assigned to St. Bernard as an Associate Pastor.  In 1982 he was appointed the Pastor of the parish and served until his return to the mission field in January, 2008.

During his pastorate, Fr. Schindler reached out to the growing number of Spanish-speaking Catholics in the area of Summit County.  He began a Mass in Spanish which continues today every Sunday.  Father also enjoyed preparing couples for marriage and performed over 3,200 weddings during his time, along with the celebration of the other sacraments and other pastoral duties.  In the 1990s he led a capital campaign to renovate the interior of the church which was a huge success and has made St. Bernard church one of the most beautiful churches in the state of Ohio.

We are grateful for his 50 years of dedication to Jesus Christ and the Church as a priest.   And especially for the almost 30 years given to this parish community and the people of Akron.  Now, when most priests would retire, may God bless and keep Fr. Schindler as he continues to serve tirelessly as pastor of two parishes and 38 chapels in El Salvador.  Ad multos annos!

Fr. Dan

Blessed Sacrament Chapel

We now provide a quiet, reverent and secure place for private prayer before Our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.  You are welcome to stop for prayer, adoration, and reflection.

We strongly encourage making time this week of Corpus Christi.  If we do not take time in His Presence (in the Eucharist or in our hearts) we cannot help but fall into sin.  “A week without prayer makes one weak.”

Perpetual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held Monday through Friday between regular office hours 9:00am – 5:00pm.  Exposition is held in the former convent chapel and entry is off the lower parking lot or through the parish offices.  Look for the door marked “Blessed Sacrament Chapel”.

The Heart of Christ in the Heart of Akron.  He waits for you.

Church Organ Fund

Dear Friends of St. Bernard,

In fall 2012, we began an all-out-effort to restore and expand our 111-year-old church organ. The last major restoration had been 60 years ago.

Having reached the estimated goal to begin the restoration, we are in the contract phase with Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.  The restoration will begin shortly and completed by the end of 2017.  In this time we plan to raise the difference between the estimated funds and actual funds: $40,000.

The Schantz Organ Company installed our church organ in 1905.  We are fortunate to have a committed team who care not only for our pipe organ, but for one of their own. The restoration by Schantz will provide us with another 70-80 years of liturgical music. Their proposal, and so the difference in price, includes a new 2017 organ console, not a rebuilt one, as originally proposed.  The construction of wind chests will be done by them.  The refinishing and replacing of missing pipes is included.  All in all, it will be complete restoration of the organ they installed a century ago, yet with room for expansion if desired in the future.

We are still accepting any size donation to meet our over all goal of restoring this first-class instrument to its beauty when Fr. Broun had it installed in 1905.  Please make checks payable to the St. Bernard Organ Fund.

 DEDICATE AN ORGAN PIPE
In memory of a loved one(s):
$100.00 per pipe or
$6,000 for a rank of 61 pipes (over 24 months)

For the Glory of God, Fr. Dan
