From the Pastor

Dear Community of St. Bernard,

We invite you to join with St. Mary Parish for our Lenten Mission conducted by Franciscan Father Albert Haase on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Evenings (February 19-21) at 7:00pm in St. Bernard church.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  We make room for anyone looking for spiritual input, renewal, and the opportunity to make the best Lent ever.  No reservations are needed.  Parking is available in the church lot and West Campus Parking Garage.  Yes…free.

Lent begins this year on February 14 with the Distribution of Blessed Ashes.  It is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation, but many Catholics choose to begin this Penitential Season by attending the Daily Mass.  Some even go to Mass throughout the Lenten Season as a means of spiritual sacrifice and renewal.  Whatever you are thinking of doing for Lent consider that if it is worth giving up for Lent or doing for Lent, that it might be worth doing year round.

On Ash Wednesday, February 14, blessed ashes will be distributed at the following:
8:45am – Scripture Prayer Service with School children in St. Mary church
9:30am – Scripture Prayer Service in St. Bernard church
12:00pm – Ecumenical Prayer Service in Children’s Hospital Chapel
12:10pm – Daily Mass in St. Bernard church
7:00pm – Daily Mass in St. Mary church

God bless you,
Fr. Dan

Catholic Charities 2018 and Parish Online Giving

St. Bernard Parish is proud to be part of the Diocesan-wide Catholic Charities Appeal that serves over 400,000 people in the 8 Northeast Counties of Ohio.  People of all ages and races and religions find and experience the Mercy of God because of your charitable giving.

Below is a video hosted by Bishop Nelson Perez, Bishop of Cleveland, about just three of the many agencies that make up Catholic Charities of Cleveland.  The first agency, Camp Christopher, has been here in Summit County for generations.

If you have already responded to this year’s Appeal – THANK YOU!  The In-pew Appeal will be held at St. Bernard the weekend of February 10/11, and at St. Mary Parish, on February 18.

Thank you for all you do in the name of the Lord.  Find more information at: www.catholiccomunity.org

Blessed Sacrament Chapel

We now provide a quiet, reverent and secure place for private prayer before Our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.  You are welcome to stop for prayer, adoration, and reflection.

We strongly encourage making time this week as students are returning to classrooms. They certainly could benefit from our prayers and example.  Always remember to give thanks that the Lord “has made you worthy to be in his presence and to minister to him” (Eucharistic Prayer II).

Perpetual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held each day in the former convent chapel and entry is off the lower parking lot or through the parish offices.  Look for the door marked “Blessed Sacrament Chapel”.  Please respect this sacred space by not carrying on conversations or reading non-religious materials in the chapel.

The Heart of Christ in the Heart of Akron.  He waits for you.

Pipe Organ Recital and Fund

Dear Friends of St. Bernard,

Because of the generosity of our parishioners and many people of Akron, the 1905 A.J. Schantz Pipe Organ in St. Bernard Church has been restored.

The Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio built our pipe organ and installed it in 1905.  We are happy and fortunate to have the original creator of this beautiful instrument restore it to its original voice.   We have set a date for its re-dedication with a Prayer Service and Organ Recital on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 3:00pm.  This restoration work by Schantz will provide us with another 70-80 years of liturgical music.

We are deeply appreciate the generosity of our many donors who made this possible. The organ fund has been discontinued.  We no longer accept donations for this completed and paid for capital improvement.  For those who donated for the dedication of a pipe, the 2017 Book of Organ Pipe Dedications is being prepared for posterity.

For the Glory of God,

Fr. Dan
